GE X5 Review

Overview of the GE X5 Camera

Actually, I don’t really like the cameras that use fixed lens. Most of these cameras has the high price, but you just need to spend some hundred more dollars to buy a DSLR model for the much better performance.

Therefore, to find a camera that includes a zoom lens of the 15X measurement with the price of under $150 (if you’re ready to take time shopping around) is not common at all. I was interested in reviewing this GE X5 model.

There are some nice features with the GE X5 camera, but as the image quality is not consistent, I feel hesitated to give a high recommendation for general shooting actions. However, if you are interested in shooting photos of the nature and a long zoom lens together at a reasonable price, the GE X5 is a nice choices, as you can see in this review article.

Through my review, the performance of the GE X5 camera is good when you are in the right shooting situation, but this camera does not perform well in less-than-ideal situations

Detailed Review of The GE X5 Camera

Image Quality

The image quality is very impressive for photos taken by the GE X5 camera in the right conditions. However, if the shooting conditions are tricky, the photos may be not that good.

The problems become more serious when you shoot photos under inadequate lighting conditions without using the flash or when you extend the zoom lens to the maximum level in these conditions. If shooting in the flash range – 23 feet when you don’t extend the zoom and 13 feet when you extend the zoom – the performance of the GE X5 is nice and you can easily have great images.

When the external lighting is good, for example in outdoor situations, you will be satisfied with the sharpness and brightness of the camera as well the accurate color results. This is common for most budget-priced cameras.

For the majority of time, the focus of the lens is sharp, but in cases that you extend the zoom lens, you may encounter the camera shake.

Performance

The shutter lag seems to be the most significant drawback of this GE X5 model, especially for shooting photos under inadequate lighting conditions. However, even in outdoor shooting, when the external lighting is good, you still may not be able to capture some spontaneous images of images of moving objects due to the shutter lag.

The initializing time of the GE X5 is pretty quick, it just takes slightly more than one second after the power switch is slided.

The menu organization of the GE X5 is nice, so it is not difficult to use the camera. When you use the mode dial, you will see a quick explanation of the feature that you have selected on the LCD screen. There are also particular buttons for “smile detection” as well as image stabilization. These buttons are pretty handy.

The performance of the popup flash is pretty nice, but you have to open the flash manually because the automatic flash is not available in the GE X5. It would be nicer if the automatic flash is offered, especially when use the full automatic mode. If sometimes, you don’t remember to open the flash, you may finally get some photos of bad quality.

Design

It just takes you a short moment to get used to the GE X5 camera and it is easy to hold it as well, but there are some problems. Firstly, this is a little bit heavy model because of the four AA batteries. These batteries are pretty handy for be swapping out in a shooting emergency, but the camera is much heavier with the AA batteries. It would have been nicer with a battery which can be rechargeable. In addition, the plastic brings the cheap feel of the camera. It is common to have the sturdy feel with cameras using fixed lens but you will not feel the same in this camera. The inclusion of the lens cap is of no use, it had better not include this lens cap.

The interesting thing is that there are both LCD and EVF in the GE X5 camera. It is very nice to find a viewfinder in such a camera with the price under $150 like the X5. However, it requires you to hold down a button to switch between the two as you cannot use these two functions simultaneously.

The 2.7-inch LCD screen is a bit small. You may encounter some difficulties in viewing the LCD if you are keeping this camera at an angle to your eyes, which makes it impossible to shoot photos at odd angles.
