Buying Guide for DSLR Cameras

Buying Guide for DSLR Cameras

The image quality of the Canon Rebel T2i is very excellent for such a DSLR model.

Why Do You Need a DSLR camera?

When you find that a solid point and shoot model is not large enough and you may easily pop it in your pocket, it may be the time to consider an upgrade to a DSLR camera. A DSLR camera brings you two greater things – it is the image quality as well as versatility.

There are a lot of various lenses which can be use with a DSLR, but a large number of camera accessories are available, for example, battery grips or flashguns, and so on. The components of a DSLR often have the better quality compared to those of a point and shoot model. In addition, you can have more control over DSLRs.

While beyond the bright daylight, it is pretty challenging to use a compact camera in tricky lighting conditions, the DSLR cameras are more powerful in these situations. With a DSLR, you are able to capture images in low light, under the sunrise or sunset, or shoot photos of quick moving objects. In addition, the great thing is that you can select the depth of field for your photos. In general, there are many great features with a DSLR camera.

Consider Your Purpose of Buying A Camera

As I discussed earlier, sometimes, it may not be easy to define which camera you want. Firstly, your budget is very important for decide a DSLR type to purchase. The starting price for DSLR cameras is about $500, obviously, the bigger budget is required for buying a DSLR. In addition, the price is even much higher for cameras aimed at the professional level, ranging from $3,500 to $10,000!

In cases where you want a lightweight camera, you can consider a less inexpensive DSLR model as its body is commonly mode of lightweight plastic. However, if you need a rugged camera that will stand up to a few knocks, the price may be higher as the camera body is often made by magnesium.

In addition, the type of lens should also be considered. If you have become used to a film camera before and currently possess a number of lenses from one manufacturer, you should consider buying a DSLR model that can use these lenses. Or you may want to have a large collection of lens with your DSLR, a manufacturer offering a wide range of lens will be a nice option. In addition, for specialized types lenses (for example, Tilt and Shift” lenses for shooting architecture photos), don’t forget that they cannot be used in several DSLR models.

Ease of Use

If you are totally new to DSLR cameras, a camera with the easy-to-use features will be a nice option. With the best entry-level DSLRs, you can find it easy to handle the camera thanks to the clear guides on the screen as well intelligent automatic modes. For example, the Nikon’s D3100 is one of the very easy-to-use cameras.

Advanced Shooting Modes

With advanced cameras, it is possible to customize a lot of camera functions and thanks to the automatic settings, it is very flexible to shoot photos in various photography situations. You can carry out the customization for very fine tuning of the camera. However, if you are not a professional photographer, you may not need all of these features (Later, you’ll find that you have not used all of them)/

The Size of Image Sensor

You’ll see two major formats within the DSLR series:  Full frame as well as cropped frame models. To find out more about the difference between these two formats, please see the article: full frame versus cropped frame formats. You should remember the most important thing that a full frame camera often has the image sensor with the size as a 35mm strip of film. The image sensor of a cropped frame model is much smaller.

The majority of cropped frame cameras has the cheaper prices, but it does not matter for many people. However, it does alter the focal length of lenses. With cropped frame models, the focal length has to be multiplied either 1.5 or 1.6 (the ratios are different for different manufacturers). This will be nice for telephoto lenses, obviously, when the range is extended.  Remember that the purpose of designing cropped frame-only wide-angle lenses is to avoid this problem, so the cropped frame models are often cheap. The down side of these cameras is that the quality of the glass is quite much lower than other high end “film” camera lenses.

Image Stabilization

Currently, you only find built-in image stabilization (IS) with Sony, Olympus, and Pentax cameras, which is very useful for steadying the image sensor to reduce the camera shake. And for Canon, Nikon, and Panasonic models, you just find IS lenses that only help steady the optics in cases of using a telephoto lens.

The total price will be higher if you buy some lenses with image stabilization. Although the image stabilization is very important, you should consider your budget before deciding on the most viable option.

Speed

The speed of a DSLR is often faster than a point and shoot model and it is true, even for the most basic DSLR. Beginner-level DSLR models commonly allow you to shot a burst of images at about 2.5 or 3 frames in one second but just the JPEG mode is available for this. . The burst mode speed is not really fast when you select the RAW mode. For most people, this is not a problem, but if you want to record a large number of photos on quick moving subjects – for example, in wildlife or sports – it is recommended that you choose a camera at the semi-pro level. Most advanced cameras allow a burst rate of about 5 frames per second (FPS), which supports both RAW and JPEG mode. For cameras aimed at profession level, you can shoot up to about around 12 fps.

Video Mode

The HD movie shooting capability is more and more common now with DSLR cameras, and the movie quality is very surprising. Even if you are not really interested in recording movies, this feature still brings fun and it is not difficult to use. The movie features are not the same for different models so you should take time doing some research to make sure about the desired movie feature.

In Conclusion

I hope that the above suggestions have helped you in looking for the greatest DSLR camera. Obviously, different models have different strengths and weaknesses, so determine the features that you consider important to decide the most suitable one for yourself. Just don’t forget that the quality of the optics in the lens is a very important aspect that you should consider thoroughly. Take time finding out more about the types of lenses that are suitable for your desired photography results.

And, now, just enjoy the new friend!
